Lahupwašwášǝtš! Haku Kiy'aliwǝ!
Greetings Brothers and Sisters! This web site is designed primarily for descendents of the Ventureño Chumash Native Americans who wish to learn the Ventureño language. Of course, this site is open to anyone, and all are welcome to discover all the fascinating intricacies of the Ventureño language.
For the time being, this site will only include links to the handouts from the four language classes given to descendents during spring 2007. As I have more time, and as I receive more ideas, I might add more explicit information on the language directly to the site.
Since the nature of what is on this web site is specific mainly to descendents of Ventureño Chumash wanting to learn more about the language, I would like this site to be as useful to those people as possible. Therefore, if you have any suggestions on what you would like to see here, please let me know via the Contact Me link to the right, or by E-mailing me at timothy@thenry.org. If it is possible, I would like to include anything and everything you might like to know!
A Note on Fonts
As can be seen, Ventureño is written with a number of characters not found in the English alphabet. Occasionally, even if the web master has done his job, these characters will not display correctly. Generally, if a character does not display correctly, it will show up as a black diamond with a question mark in it on your web browser. I have taken many pains to make sure this will not happen. However, if you are having issues displaying this page and the handouts from the session correctly, please let me know immediately.
Works in Progress
As it currently stands, I have several works in progress regarding Ventureño. First, it is my goal to have a written grammar and dictionary of the language made available at sometime in the future. It is possible that both items (especially the dictionary) will not be published, but it is my hope that both items can be put into publishable format, available for those wanting to use them.
I will also be writing (either officially or unofficially) various articles on Ventureño as time goes on. These may not be readily available through common means, but I will try to keep a current list of published items that can be requested directly from me.
